 Welcome to 2012!  For some of you the December holidays brought a proposal...congratulations! So now that you are engaged, the planning must begin.  Please remember to sit back, relax and enjoy your engagement for awhile before diving into your planning. Have numerous discussions with your soon to be bride or groom about what tpe of wedding you plan on having.  What is important when it comes to  your wedding?  Will it be large or small, in a winery or in a hotel ballroom?  Planning a wedding takes lots of energy, fact finding and time, so make sure you give yourself plenty of time. Enjoy getting used to the word "engaged", and enjoy this next chapter in your life.

I really am not one to blow my own horn, but I decided to share an honor I have received.  I have again  been voted  one of "The best" for 2012 in the Wedding Planning Category in Washingtonian Bride and Groom Magazine  It is an honor to be amongst the best colleagues in the wedding industry.

If you are a fan of tangerines, well you are in the know for 2012!  Tangerine and all hues of orange are going to be the big color for 2012.  Tangerine, in fact, has been named the Pantone color for the coming year.  You will see it not only in clothing,  personal accessories ,and for the home, but in centerpieces, bridesmaids dresses, invitations, and even in men's formal wear accessories.

 Wedding season came to a close for us at For All Occasions with Marissa and Donny's wedding on 11-11-11.  What a wonderful way to end the 2011 wedding season with such a beautiful couple whose photos were captured by such a talented photgrapher, Agung with Seize The Day Photography.

The theme for the wedding was romance and romantic movies, and the fun elements of movie table names, great music, and popcorn favors made it special. We congratulate Marissa and Donny and wish them many years of happiness together.

Do you know the origins of some wedding traditions?  Most couples do not, so today, I thought it would be fun to share some of them.

To "wed" the word "wed" came from the ancient Greek word for "pledge"

Wedding dresses were worn in an array of colors.  White dresses only became popular about 150 years ago!

Veils- The veil was once a symbol of obedience and submissiveness

Rings- Why is the wedding ring placed on the third finger of your left hand?  Ancient Greeks believed that a vein in this finger went directly to the heart.

 The Wedding Cake- During Roman times, wedding guests threw cake crumbs at the bride and groom to bless them with fertility.  The cakes were either biscuits or scones actually made by the guests, and they were stacked during the wedding.  Much later on, a French baker used the "piled high" concept to create the decorated multi-tiered cake.

Last but not least, Where does the bride stand during the ceremony?  The bride stood to the left of the groom so that his right hand was free to draw his sword to fend off and "bad guys" who crashed the ceremony.

 So otften wedding notes and blogs have pointers for the brides, but today, let's consider the groom and his wedding party.

It is a fact that most men would prefer to dress in casual style clothing most of the time, but , boy, do they look handsome when donning a tuxedo!

 While traditional rules are followed as guidelines, there are many options to accommodate personal preference in the area of men's formalwear.

One of the most noticeable is the increase of color as an accent. color is incorporated into the cummmerbunds, ties, pocket squares, to most times coordinate with the bridesmaids dresses.

Remember, medium or darker colors are fine anytime, but are more appropriate during the evening or in the winter months.Tails are proper anytime, but, are most commonly worn by the groom only, rather than the entire wedding party. Light color linen suits are certainly appropriate for a summer wedding, whereas, if there is a beach themed wedding, many grooms will only be in kacky pants and a beach type shirt. To assure that guests come properly attired on your special  day, make sure that on the reception card of the invitation ensemble you send the message "Black tie optional or invited"

This offers your guests a guideline as to what dress code is really expected. Those men that own a tux will be glad to have the opportunity to wear it again, and the others will know they must be in a suit, not in jeans.

Flowers and their Meanings

As a planner I am often asked about different aspects of the necessary items needed for the wedding.  One of these is the flowers that might make up a bouquet or a centerpiece. The flowers add the beauty and set the mood for the room décor in many instances, and I always recommend using a professional floral designer to assist with this aspect of the wedding.

The following are some of the meanings of the different flowers that might be a part of the wedding day:

Rose -Red meaning love, simplicity, and happiness

Roses red and white meaning unity

Iris meaning good news and inspiration

Bells of Ireland meaning luck

Forget Me Not meaning true love

Pink Carnation meaning a mother’s love and gratitude

Hydrangea meaning perseverance

Violet meaning faithfulness

You now are on your way to being a bit more educated before meeting with your floral designer.  Have fun designing your bouquets and centerpieces!

 Traditions should be incorporated into your wedding in some shape or fashion. However, it is always nice to create your version of "new traditions".

 A favorite idea for those brides who are marrying for a 2nd time : Families are now being blended and the total amount of children or grandchildren might be  too many for each person to have a role in the ceremony . Tryiing to figure out who should take part in the ceremony is difficult, so the solution is to have the bride walk down the aisle alone carrying an empty basket.  As she walks down the aisle each child or grandchild holds a flower which they place in the basket as she passes their seat.  When the bride reaches her groom at the altar, she now has a basket filled with not only flowers,  but with love from everyone in their new combined family.

At one recent wedding, the formal, traditional wedding photographs were taken before the ceremony, but the couple arranged for an artist to attend and sketch various scenes from the ceremony and reception.  Simple pen and ink versions of the wedding brought back wonderful memories, were given to the parents as gifts, and it  was also  a fun activity for guests at the wedding to witness.

 Whatever the "new tradition" is that you incorporate into your wedding, have fun with it and make it memorable.
